Free gaming thumbnail maker for YouTube

Turn a gameplay screenshot into a loud, readable YouTube thumbnail in a few minutes. Original gaming layouts, chunky outlined text and face cut-outs, all in your browser. No sign-up.

What makes a gaming thumbnail work

Most people see your thumbnail at roughly the size of a matchbox on a phone, next to a dozen others from bigger channels. A gaming thumbnail that wins that moment usually does three things:

  • One clear moment. The clutch, the boss, the build, the fail. One idea, not a collage of everything that happened.
  • Two to four big words. “FIRST TRY?!”, “NEW PB”, “DAY 100”. The title does the explaining, the thumbnail does the shouting.
  • A face or a strong subject. A reaction face, a character, or one object that stands out from the background.

Thumbnailr's gaming layouts are built around those rules, so you start from something that already reads well small and only swap in your own screenshot, face and words.

How to make a gaming thumbnail, step by step

  1. Pick a layout. Open the gaming templates and choose the one closest to your video: a win, a fail, a build or a challenge.
  2. Drop in your screenshot. Pause on the most dramatic frame, take a screenshot, and drag it onto the canvas. Crop in tighter than feels natural; small details vanish on a phone.
  3. Add your face. Upload a reaction photo and add a cut-out with a sticker edge. Pro can remove the background in one click, and it runs on your device.
  4. Write two to four words. Use the outlined display fonts and keep the text away from the bottom-right corner, where YouTube puts the video length.
  5. Check it. Run the click check and feed test to see how it looks at real feed sizes, in dark and light mode.
  6. Export. Download a 1280×720 PNG, or a JPG kept under 2 MB so it uploads from the YouTube app too. See the thumbnail size guide for the current specs.

Tips from gaming channels that grew

Exaggerate the colour

Game footage often looks flat once it's shrunk. Push saturation and contrast, and put a dark or blurred background behind your text so it pops.

Keep a recognisable style

Use the same font, colours and face position across a series so returning viewers spot you in the feed. Pro's brand kit saves these and restyles any thumbnail in one click. For a run of episodes, series mode makes Day 1 to Day 30 in one batch.

Don't repeat the title

If the title says “I beat the final boss without armour”, the thumbnail can just say “NO ARMOUR?”. Click check flags thumbnails whose text repeats the title.

Exports have no watermark on either plan. Pro adds 4K export and the other eight gaming layouts.
